{"id":11404,"date":"2018-12-06T16:56:23","date_gmt":"2018-12-06T16:56:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/endcorporalpunishment.org\/?p=11404"},"modified":"2020-01-16T16:00:31","modified_gmt":"2020-01-16T16:00:31","slug":"cedaw-issues-recommendations-on-corporal-punishment-of-children","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/endcorporalpunishment.org\/cedaw-issues-recommendations-on-corporal-punishment-of-children\/","title":{"rendered":"CEDAW issues recommendations on corporal punishment of children"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At its 71<sup>st<\/sup> session in October \u2013 November 2018, the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women issued recommendations on corporal punishment of children:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To\u00a0the <strong>Bahamas<\/strong>, the Committee recommended the prohibition of corporal punishment of children in homes and schools as well as the strengthening of awareness-raising programmes promoting non-violent discipline.<\/li>\n<li>The Committee expressed concern to <strong>Mauritius<\/strong> for the limited scope of the prohibition of corporal punishment in the Child Protection Act 1995 (which only applies in schools) and recommended that the Government adopt legislation to explicitly prohibit corporal punishment of children in all settings.<\/li>\n<li>To <strong>Samoa<\/strong>, the Committee expressed concern that corporal punishment was still culturally accepted and practised in schools and that legislation still recognised a right to \u201creasonable punishment\u201d to teachers, despite the existing prohibition of corporal punishment in the Education Act.
