Ending corporal punishment is key to ending all violence against children (SDG16.2), reducing violence across the whole of society in the longer term and in working towards other Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) targets, including those related to health, education, violence against women and girls, equality and economic growth.\u00a0<\/p>

The annual UN High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development provides a key opportunity for national and global actors to review progress and challenges in achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The 2019 Forum, \u201cEmpowering people and ensuring inclusiveness and equality<\/em>\u201d,\u00a0<\/span>took place between 9-18 July and welcomed over 2,000 participants to the United Nations Headquarters in New York. It focused particularly on the Sustainable Development Goals outlined below:<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n

Goal 4<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all<\/p>

Goal 8<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all<\/p>

Goal 10<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0Reduce inequality within and among countries<\/p>

Goal 13<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts<\/p>

Goal 16<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels<\/p>

Goal 17<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development<\/p>

Our Director, Anna Henry, represented the CSO Forum to End Violence Against Children at the #SafeToLearn<\/strong><\/a> Leaders Event, where 17 members of the CSO Forum confirmed their commitment to use their influence at the grassroots level to advance Safe to Learn\u2019s agenda, mission, and work to end violence.<\/p>

On the same day, we launched our Schools Briefing, Teaching without violence: Prohibiting corporal punishment<\/a>. This briefing highlights the states where corporal punishment remains lawful in some or all schools, sets out the key elements of making prohibition a reality, and showcases programmes by our partners around the world seeking to end violence in schools.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n

ChildFund Alliance \u00a0child-friendly accountability initiative<\/strong><\/p>

ChildFund Alliance<\/a><\/u>\u00a0launched a mechanism that will enable children to hold decision-makers accountable to their goal to eradicate all forms of violence against children under SDG 16.2. During the launch, a panel of young people described how they have been working with ChildFund to use the\u00a0accountability tool<\/a><\/u>\u00a0to raise issues \u00a0with policy makers including their experience of corporal punishment.<\/p>

World Vision International launch of Small Cracks, Big Gaps<\/strong><\/p>

World Vision launched\u00a0Small Cracks, Big Gaps,<\/a><\/u>\u00a0urgently calling for more comprehensive action to tackle \u00a0violence against children .\u00a0Speakers at the event included Minister Yoriko Suzuki from the\u00a0Mission of Japan<\/a><\/u>, who restated their commitment to tackling \u00a0the issue of corporal punishment.<\/p>

Justice for Children<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>global initiative\u00a0Call to Action<\/em><\/strong><\/p>

The\u00a0Justice for Children initiative, including the University of Strathclyde, Defence for Children International and Terre des Homme launched a Call to Action<\/a><\/u>\u00a0setting out \u00a0ten critical challenges that highlight the realities of justice for children internationally, to inform the next steps for the implementation of the\u00a0UN Sustainable Development Goal 16<\/a>\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>
