A\u00a0new\u00a0study reveals overwhelming evidence that physical punishment \u2013 the most common form of violence against\u00a0children \u2013 makes children\u2019s behavior worse over time.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The study, which was led by researchers at University College London in the United Kingdom and published by the Lancet on 28 June 2021<\/span>,<\/span><\/i>\u00a0examines 69 previous analyses conducted across nine countries\u00a0over the last two decades.\u00a0Each of these studies were chosen because of their prospective longitudinal methodology; they followed children\u2019s behavior \u2013 and their lives \u2013 over time.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The results of the study show that regardless of any external factors, including\u00a0gender, ethnicity, race or geography, the links between physical punishment and negative child behavior remain consistent: when corporal punishment is used against them, children\u2019s\u00a0behaviour\u00a0suffers.\u00a0The study also proves that physical punishment is not associated with positive outcomes\u00a0over time, and that, time and again,\u00a0the practice\u00a0is associated with other forms of child maltreatment.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u201cAn ever-growing body of research consistently finds that physical punishment predicts a range of negative outcomes for children\u201d <\/span><\/h3>

\u201cThe growing consensus that hitting children is harmful and ineffective has led 62 countries to pass laws prohibiting physical punishment of children, and another 26 countries to commit to doing so.\u201d <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3><\/blockquote>
