The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.knowviolenceinchildhood.org\/\">Know Violence in Childhood 2017<\/a> study estimated that 1.3 billion boys and girls aged 1-14 years experience corporal punishment at home.<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/mics.unicef.org\/\">UNICEF MICS<\/a> studies frequently find high levels of physical and psychological punishment of children.<a href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\">[2]<\/a><\/p><p>&nbsp;<\/p><ul><li><strong>Direct physical harm and abuse<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>Corporal punishment <strong>kills thousands of children each year<\/strong>, injures many more and is the direct cause of many children\u2019s physical impairments.<a href=\"#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\">[3]<\/a><\/p><p>Most violence against children commonly referred to as \u201cabuse\u201d is corporal punishment.<a href=\"#_ftn4\" name=\"_ftnref4\">[4]<\/a> All corporal punishment, however mild or light, carries an inbuilt risk of escalation. Studies suggest that parents who used corporal punishment are at heightened risk of perpetrating severe maltreatment.<a href=\"#_ftn5\" name=\"_ftnref5\">[5]<\/a><\/p><p>Even more \u201cmoderate\u201d corporal punishment is associated with atypical brain functioning.<a href=\"#_ftn6\" name=\"_ftnref6\">[6]<\/a><\/p><p><strong>Ending corporal punishment is essential in ending physical \u201cchild abuse\u201d<\/strong>. The legality of corporal punishment undermines child protection: it reinforces the idea that a certain degree of violence against children is acceptable.<\/p><p>&nbsp;<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"row\">\n\t\n\n<div class=\"col-xs-12 col-sm-12\" style=\"background: transparent  \">\n\t<div class=\"text-block shortcode-container\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\">\n\t<ul><li><strong>Strong links between corporal punishment and negative impacts on mental health<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>Two major meta-analysis in 2002<a href=\"#_ftn7\" name=\"_ftnref7\">[7]<\/a> and 2016<a href=\"#_ftn8\" name=\"_ftnref8\">[8]<\/a> reviewing evidence from studies involving hundreds of thousands of children found associations between corporal punishment and:<\/p><ul><li>behaviour disorders<\/li><li>anxiety disorders<\/li><li>depression<\/li><li>hopelessness<\/li><li>low self-esteem<\/li><\/ul><p>Later studies have confirmed these associations and found further links with suicide attempts, alcohol and drug dependency, hostility and emotional instability, self-harm and other mental health problems, with increased risk continuing into adulthood.<a href=\"#_ftn9\" name=\"_ftnref9\">[9]<\/a><\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"row\">\n\t\n\n<div class=\"col-xs-12 col-sm-6 col-md-3\" style=\"background: transparent  \">\n\t<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"col-xs-12 col-sm-6\" style=\"background: transparent  \">\n\t<div class=\"feature-box text-center media-box \">\n    <div class=\"fbox-media\">\n                    <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-no-retina src=\"https:\/\/endcorporalpunishment.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/World-Health-Organisation-quote-1280x640.jpg\" alt=\"World Health Organisation quote\" width=\"1280\" height=\"640\" class=\"img-responsive\" \/>\n        \t<\/div>\n\t<div class=\"fbox-desc\">\n        <h2><\/h2>\n        <span class=\"subtitle\"><\/span>\n        \n    <\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"row\">\n\t\n\n<div class=\"col-xs-12 col-sm-12\" style=\"background: transparent  \">\n\t<div class=\"text-block shortcode-container\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\">\n\t<ul><li><strong>Indirect physical harm<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>Associations have been found between corporal punishment and health issues in childhood and youth, including asthma, suffering injuries and accidents, being hospitalised, and developing habits which put their health at risk, such as smoking, fighting with others and alcohol consumption.<a href=\"#_ftn10\" name=\"_ftnref10\">[10]<\/a><\/p><p>Corporal punishment in childhood is also associated with adulthood health issues including developing cancer, asthma, alcohol-related problems, migraine, cardiovascular disease, arthritis and obesity as an adult.<a href=\"#_ftn11\" name=\"_ftnref11\">[11]<\/a><\/p><p>&nbsp;<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"row\">\n\t\n\n<div class=\"col-xs-12 col-sm-2\" style=\"background: transparent  \">\n\t<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"row\">\n\t\n\n<div class=\"col-xs-12 col-sm-12\" style=\"background: transparent  \">\n\t\n<div class=\"heading-block text-left heading-block-line\">\n\t<h3 class=\"special-heading\" >Connections between corporal punishment of children and wider violence in society<\/h3>\n\t<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"row\">\n\t\n\n<div class=\"col-xs-12 col-sm-12\" style=\"background: transparent  \">\n\t<div class=\"text-block shortcode-container\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\">\n\t<p>The negative effects of corporal punishment on individual children and adults add up to negative effects on society as a whole.<\/p><p>Research suggests that the more a society approves of violence for certain purposes (eg. corporal punishment of children), the more individuals in that society are likely to use violence more widely; and that the approval and prevalence of corporal punishment in societies is linked to the use or endorsement of other forms of violence, including fighting, torture, the death penalty, war and murder.<a href=\"#_ftn12\" name=\"_ftnref12\">[12]<\/a><\/p><p>A few states have carried out research on the impact of their prohibition and efforts to eliminate corporal punishment. The wider positive effects of the decreased acceptance and use of violent punishment of children are becoming visible<a href=\"#_ftn13\" name=\"_ftnref13\">[13]<\/a>:<\/p><ul><li>Sweden \u2013 associated decrease in the number of 15- to 17-year-olds involved in theft, narcotics crimes, assaults against young children and rape and a decrease in suicide and use of alcohol and drugs by young people<\/li><li>Finland - associated decline in the number child murders<\/li><li>Germany \u2013 associated decrease in violence by young people in school and elsewhere and in the proportion of women experiencing physical injury due to domestic violence<\/li><\/ul><p>&nbsp;<\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><a href=\"#_ftnref1\" name=\"_ftn1\"><\/a><\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"row\">\n\t\n\n<div class=\"col-xs-12 col-sm-12\" style=\"background: transparent  \">\n\t\n\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"row\">\n\t\n\n<div class=\"col-xs-12 col-sm-12\" style=\"background: transparent  \">\n\t\n<div class=\"heading-block text-left heading-block-line\">\n\t<h3 class=\"special-heading\" >Eliminating corporal punishment is a global development priority<\/h3>\n\t<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"row\">\n\t\n\n<div class=\"col-xs-12 col-sm-8\" style=\"background: transparent  \">\n\t<div class=\"text-block shortcode-container\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\">\n\t<p>The elimination of violence against children including corporal punishment is called for in several targets of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.<\/p><p>Most explicitly in Target 16.2: \u2018End abuse, exploitation, trafficking and all forms of violence against and torture of children\u2019, but also SDG 3: \u2018Ensure healthy lives and promoting well-being at all ages\u2019, SDG 5.2.1 \u2018Eliminate violence against women and girls\u2019, SDG 4: \u2018Quality education\u2019, and others.<\/p><p>&nbsp;<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"col-xs-12 col-sm-4\" style=\"background: transparent  \">\n\t<div class=\"feature-box text-center media-box \">\n    <div
