{"id":2418,"date":"2017-12-01T11:13:28","date_gmt":"2017-12-01T11:13:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.endcorporalpunishment.net\/?p=2418"},"modified":"2019-08-02T13:03:46","modified_gmt":"2019-08-02T12:03:46","slug":"ghana-commits-to-prohibiting-all-corporal-punishment-at-uprs-28th-session","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/endcorporalpunishment.org\/ghana-commits-to-prohibiting-all-corporal-punishment-at-uprs-28th-session\/","title":{"rendered":"Ghana commits to prohibiting all corporal punishment at UPR\u2019s 28th session"},"content":{"rendered":"<article class=\"col-lg-9\">\n<div class=\"entry\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">During the 28<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0session of the Universal Periodic Review in November 2017, the human rights record of the following fourteen states were reviewed:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><strong>Ghana<\/strong>\u00a0accepted recommendations to prohibit corporal punishment in all settings, making a clear commitment to enacting law reform. Recent governmental declarations have confirmed this commitment, particularly in light of the upcoming review of the Children\u2019s Act. This brings the number of states committed to full prohibition of all corporal punishment to 56.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sri Lanka<\/strong>\u00a0also reiterated its commitment to enacting prohibition in all settings by accepting a clear recommendation to do so. Sri Lanka last year became a Pathfinder with the Global Partnership to End Violence Against Children: this renewed commitment must lead to prohibition of corporal punishment of children as a matter of priority.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Gabon<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Guatemala<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0<strong>Republic of Korea<\/strong>\u00a0have also supported recommendations on the prohibition of corporal punishment \u2013 we are seeking official confirmation from their Governments that they are committed to enacting prohibition of all corporal punishment of children, in all settings.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>Czech Republic<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Japan<\/strong>\u00a0each received several recommendations to prohibit corporal punishment in all settings \u2013 their respective Governments will respond to the recommendations prior to the Human Rights Council\u2019s session in March 2018.\u00a0<strong>Pakistan<\/strong>\u00a0will also consider a recommendation to implement \u201cthe necessary safeguards for the protection of children against corporal punishment\u201d.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Switzerland<\/strong>\u00a0received two recommendations on the prohibition of all corporal punishment, supporting one and \u2018noting\u2019 the other. Its national report to the UPR, submitted in July 2017, reiterated the Government\u2019s position that \u201cit is not necessary to explicitly incorporate this principle in the Civil Code or to amend the criminal law\u201d.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Argentina<\/strong>\u00a0received a recommendation to prohibit corporal punishment in all settings, despite having enacted prohibition in 2014.
