{"id":25275,"date":"2024-03-14T11:24:16","date_gmt":"2024-03-14T11:24:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/endcorporalpunishment.org\/?p=25275"},"modified":"2024-03-14T11:28:08","modified_gmt":"2024-03-14T11:28:08","slug":"upr-42-43","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/endcorporalpunishment.org\/upr-42-43\/","title":{"rendered":"Eight states accept recommendations to prohibit corporal punishment of children in all settings at UPR 42 and UPR 43"},"content":{"rendered":"\n            <div class=\"separator- glacier-section\"  id=\"section-69d7bea4bbb28\">\n            <div class=\"container\">\n                <section>\n                    \n<div class=\"row\">\n\t\n\n<div class=\"col-xs-12 col-sm-8\" style=\"background: transparent  \">\n\t<div class=\"text-block shortcode-container\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\">\n\t<p>During its 53<sup>rd<\/sup> and 54<sup>th<\/sup> sessions held in 2023, the Human Rights Council adopted the final working group reports for the Universal Periodic Reviews\u2019 42<sup>nd<\/sup> and 43<sup>rd<\/sup> sessions. The reports included states\u2019 formal responses to all recommendations extended during the reviews. States can either accept or \u2018note\u2019 UPR recommendations.<\/p><p>&nbsp;<\/p><p><strong>Burundi<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Czech Republic, Gabon, Guatemala, Mali, Sri Lanka, Switzerland<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>the United Arab Emirates\u00a0<\/strong>accepted recommendations to prohibit corporal punishment of children all settings of their lives. <strong>Serbia<\/strong> received recommendations to prohibit in all settings but did not reply.<\/p><p><strong>Note:<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Serbia, Sri Lanka<\/strong> and the <strong>United Arab Emirates\u00a0<\/strong>were already committed to reforming their laws to prohibit corporal punishment in all settings. Similarly, the <strong>Czech Republic<\/strong> and <strong>Switzerland<\/strong> are currently in the process of drafting prohibiting laws.<\/p><p>We will be following up with <strong>Burundi<\/strong>, <strong>Gabon<\/strong>, <strong>Guatemala<\/strong> and <strong>Mali<\/strong> to confirm their intentions to introduce prohibiting legislation.<\/p><p>&nbsp;<\/p><p><strong>Ghana<\/strong> accepted recommendations to prohibit corporal punishment in schools but rejected all recommendations to prohibit corporal punishment in all settings.<\/p><p><strong>The Bahamas <\/strong>noted (rejected) all recommendations to prohibit corporal punishment in all settings. <strong>Barbados<\/strong> noted all recommendations to prohibit corporal punishment in all settings but supported recommendations to adopt \u2018alternatives to corporal punishment\u2019. <strong>Tonga<\/strong> also noted recommendations in relation to prohibition and elimination of corporal punishment- including in the home- but supported a recommendation on prohibition of corporal punishment for crimes against children.<\/p><p>Despite the ongoing legality of corporal punishment in\u00a0<strong>Pakistan<\/strong> no recommendations on the issue were made to them. Nevertheless, the Government of Pakistan supported general recommendations to strengthen the protection of children.<\/p><p>&nbsp;<\/p><h3>Examples of some of the accepted recommendations:<\/h3><p>To Guatemala:<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\u201cTake more effective measures to deal with the increase in domestic violence, school violence and corporal punishment, and create national policies and programmes aimed at protecting from and eradicating violence against and harassment and rape of women, girls, adolescents, especially migrants, and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex persons (Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela).\u201d<\/p><p>To Czech Republic:<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\u201cExplicitly prohibit corporal punishment of children and strengthen activities aimed at encouraging non-violent forms of discipline as alternatives in this regard (South Africa);<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\u201cStrengthen national measures for child protection by enacting legislation that prohibits corporal punishment of children in all settings, including the home (Sweden);<\/p><p>To Mali:<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\"Continue efforts to prohibit all forms of violence against children in all settings, including recruitment of children as child soldiers and corporal punishment (Lesotho).\u201d<\/p><p>&nbsp;<\/p><h3>Find out
