All states have a human rights, ethical and development obligation to prohibit and eliminate all forms of corporal punishment of children.<\/strong> Some\u00a0states\u00a0are leading the way,\u00a0having\u00a0already enacted prohibition of all corporal punishment and working\u00a0hard to\u00a0implement it\u00a0fully domestically and to promote it globally. Some\u00a0are\u00a0actively working\u00a0towards\u00a0law reform. But\u00a0others\u00a0still need to intensify their efforts to achieve prohibition in legislation\u00a0and fulfill children\u2019s right to protection from all corporal punishment.<\/p>

Among the states which have not yet enacted a ban,\u00a0End Corporal Punishment\u00a0monitors\u00a0those which express a commitment to enacting legislation prohibiting all corporal punishment of children, however light, in all settings including the home<\/strong>.<\/p>

Based on our <\/strong>list of criteria to confirm states\u2019 commitment<\/a><\/span>, we recently conducted an in-depth review of states committed to prohibition of corporal punishment<\/strong>.\u00a0To do this, we also used states\u2019 support or rejection of recommendations to prohibit all corporal punishment made during the state\u2019s Universal Periodic Review (UPR).<\/p>

We now have <\/strong>26 states committed<\/strong><\/a><\/span> to prohibiting corporal punishment in all settings.<\/strong><\/p>

We notably welcome the Czech Republic<\/strong> and Switzerland<\/strong> to the list of committed states. This is because both states accepted recommendations to prohibit and are currently reforming their laws to prohibit corporal punishment in all settings.<\/p>

Three states have lost their committed status\u00a0in the updated list, because of their\u00a0lack of progress on the commitments they made years ago. These states are Chile, Ghana<\/strong> and Myanmar.<\/strong><\/p>

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>

The First Global Ministerial Conference to End Violence Against Children<\/a><\/span> will include an opportunity for states to make bold new commitments to end violence against children. We urge all states that have not yet prohibited all corporal punishment to commit to upholding this fundamental right and protection for children by pledging to enact law reform and effective implementation in the near term.<\/p>

With six years\u00a0left to realise the\u00a0<\/strong>Agenda for Sustainable Development<\/strong><\/a><\/span>,\u00a0states must take\u00a0concrete and immediate\u00a0action to protect children from all forms of violence<\/strong> without delay.<\/strong><\/p>
