This briefing promotes the adoption of indicators on violent punishment for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) - the 17 global goals which make up the the\u00a02030 Agenda for Sustainable Development<\/a>, which\u00a0was formally adopted at a high-level plenary meeting of the General Assembly held in New York on 25-27 September 2015.<\/span><\/p>

The briefing calls for\u00a0the adoption of two global indicators on violent punishment under SDG target 16.2, which aims to end all forms of violence against children. The first proposed global indicator is on elimination of violent punishment \u2013\u00a0Percentage of children aged 0-17 years who experienced any physical punishment by caregivers in the past month<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 and the second is on prohibition \u2013\u00a0Violent punishment of children is prohibited in all settings of children\u2019s lives including the family home<\/em>. The briefing\u00a0highlights that these indicators are highly suitable and relevant and entirely feasible, as easily adaptable internationally recognized datasets already exist. It emphasises that prohibiting and eliminating violent punishment is key for target 16.2 and highlights the other targets which these indicators would monitor.<\/span><\/p>
