Over 30 million<\/a> children worldwide\u00a0<\/span><\/span>have been forcibly displaced<\/span><\/span> by violence and conflict, and even more <\/span><\/span>by natural disasters and other crises<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>During\u00a0<\/span><\/span>times of\u00a0<\/span><\/span>conflict and crisis, institutions a<\/span><\/span>nd support structures that guarantee <\/span><\/span>basic human rights and protection are broken down<\/span><\/span>, leaving children extremely vulnerable to violence and exploitation<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div>\n\n

Changes to children\u2019s<\/span><\/span>\u00a0supervision and accompaniment, as a result of family separation or\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the loss of one or more carer, and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>extreme economic stress due to loss of livelihood or changes in income generation, can lead to\u00a0<\/span><\/span>lashing out against children, substance abuse and other mental health difficulties which put children at risk of violent punishment.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n

Girls are especially vulnerable\u00a0<\/span><\/span>as a result<\/span><\/span> of reduced income and changes to the physical environment. Education is<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>also<\/span><\/span> profoundly affected<\/span><\/span>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0<\/span><\/span>an essential right, and even more essential for displaced children as it can restore their sense of normalcy, structure and hope.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div>\n\n

We must not forget the impact that so-called \u2018everyday violence\u2019 such as corporal punishment has on children who have already experienced so much violence and stress. Growing evidence shows the elevated risk of experiencing corporal punishment faced by displaced children.<\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n

Human Rights Watch<\/span><\/span><\/strong> have reported<\/a> on corporal punishment of children in schools in Lebanon, which found that Syrian refugee children <\/span><\/span>may<\/span><\/span> be particularly vulnerable to abuse in schools. In addition to beatings, other humiliating treatment included several examples of children prohibited from using the bathroom. Some refugee communities have stopped sending their children school in an effort to prevent abuse.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div>\n\n

International Rescue Committee and the Behaviour Insights Unit<\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0have conducted an in-depth study<\/a> on the use of corporal punishment by teachers in\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Nyarugusu<\/span><\/span>\u00a0Refugee Camp in Tanzania\u2014the third largest refugee camp in the world and home to nearly 140,000 refugees from neighbouring Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Evidence is emerging that teachers here view physical punishment as a way to prepare students for adulthood, teach them to respect their elders, and guide them to a better future.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n
